Prestwood 10k

I just couldn’t not do the Prestwood 10k despite being on Hayling Island, I had no excuse especially as it was a virtual one due to the pandemic. For those of you who have known me a long time I first entered the Prestwood 10k six years ago as a wheelchair user. That was when I had my Trekanetic aka the purple bomb. The only difference this time was I didn’t have six RAF guys push me round!

On the 28th of May I set off with hubby and my PA in the glorious sunshine, and the balloons that had been sent with my joining pack had been blown up and attached to my wheelchair. I was dressed in my race vest top which gave me the confidence to go out there and smash it. After all this was a great opportunity of seeing more of Hayling by foot, my Strava was linked to my just giving page and we pressed start as soon as we left the front door.

After traveling for one hour, hubby thought it was a good idea to stop and see how far we had gone so that we could work out how long it would take us to complete the 10k. Oh! What happened next we certainly didn’t anticipate, hubby looked at my Strava and apparently we had only been going for 7 seconds, somehow the stop button had been knocked on my phone.

Having started Strava again, we were on our way, although we calculated that we had done approximately 3k, because my Strava was linked to my justgiving page we needed to start again. The upside was I was going to get to see more of Hayling. I am lucky enough that my PA has lived on Hayling all her life so hubby and I felt like we had our own personal tour guide.

It was a lovely day and we were getting to see parts of Hayling we had never seen before. My PA became our official race photographer. We went up the billy trail, which is a disused railway and from there I had the most perfect views of our beautiful surroundings. Before we knew it I had clocked up 8k, that was when we realised we were 4k away from home. Our Prestwood 10k was soon turning into a lot more.

The final part of our Prestwood 10k was along the seafront. For the first time I was experiencing Hayling Island on a Bank holiday and in brilliant sunshine. It seemed like every holiday maker in the UK had descended on to the little island I now call home. Round the corner we came home, my Strava said we had completed 12k, plus of course the 3k that wasn’t recorded, I certainly felt satisfied that 15k had been completed and all before 2pm just in time for our Asda internet shopping to be delivered.
