Night Splints
Three years ago today I came out of Hospital after having a three week stay because of my MS. It has been a really long road to get back to any sense of normality. I will write about that in greater detail when my headspace allows (I will need best part of a day).
Back in February I was referred to Orthotics for a pair of night splints by my Occupational Therapist but alas due to Covid the Hospital has only just opened up for Outpatients, finally I got my appointment through yesterday.
So with my PA (Helen) we rocked up at 3.30pm and in we went, I was so pleased as the Orthotics guy was the same one that I have been seeing for the past ten years. Luke welcomed me in and it was like I had never been away. I haven’t seen Luke for three years, we spent the first half an hour chatting and catching up! We then got down to business and he decided that my tendons had worsened therefore night splints straight off the shelf would no longer be suitable and I needed made to measure ones. Well I had no idea what that would entail, but soon it became very clear and in no time at all he was wrapping my lower legs in a crepe bandage filled with plaster of paris! I think the pictures below will best describe it
Once the cast had been made I was then handed a sheet with all the various patterns that could go on the final plaster. The majority I think were meant for kids, I didn’t quite fancy footballs or sharks and as I write this and due to brain fog I can’t even remember what I ended up choosing. Well at least it will be a nice surprise when I go for my final fitting 😊.
We left there with my legs and trousers covered in plaster of paris but hopefully it will be worthwhile. I’m sure I will update you when all is completed.

You will have to post a picture when you get them so we can see what pattern you chose!
ReplyDeleteYou have come a long way in those three years thanks to your grit and determination-you are an inspiration darling.
